An extended Friday Tonic special for Ether Festival as BBC Radio 3 Late Junction presenter and Flomotion founder Nick Luscombe presents music from Rough Fields - the stage name of James Birchall, an electro-acoustic composer, lo-fi/noise/folk artist and electronica producer from Manchester. The project brings together the disparate strands of James' previous musical paths through folk, classical, rock, minimalism, electronica, electro-acoustic and experimental composition, and incorporates a lot of found sound - cardboard box kick drums, controlled pop-bottle explosions, household implements, doctored electronics and other oddities. The Rough Fields live show is built around the construction of these quirky, lo-fi loops in realtime by a six-piece band of multi-instrumentalists. Affectionately known as 'The Godmother of Japanese Electronica', Coppe has been pioneering her own brand of vocal electronica since the mid '90s. Over her 14 albums she has collaborated with some of the electronic music scene's leading names, such as Plaid, DJ Vadim, The Orb, Atom™, Kettel, Shitmat and Nobukazu Takemura. She has shared stages all over the world with the likes of Mira Calix and Modified Toy Orchestra. Nick Luscombe also trawls through some of the world's best new electronic music with Flomotion DJ sets.

While taking its name from a 15th century Burgundian composer, Busnoys is very much a 21st century jazz group, which draws inspiration not only from jazz giants such as Eric Dolphy, Don Cherry and Bill Frisell, but also looks further afield to classical and avant-garde influences, including Stravinsky, Cage and Steve Reich, and flavours this rich stew with generous sprinklings of electronica and Americana. The music is based around the compositions of vibes player Martin Pyne, joined by two musicians who have emerged from the wonderfully vibrant Bristol music scene, bassist Jeff Spencer and drummer Trevor Davies. Their new album 'by tapering torchlight' has been well received on both sides of the Atlantic, and has already featured several times on BBC Radio 3's flagship show 'Late Junction', described as 'sublime' by Max Reinhardt on the show.'Innovative trio' The Independent

Already making radio waves from Gilles Peterson on Radio 1 to Radio 3's 'Late Junction', Lund Quartet are taking their sound to a wider world of jazz, hip hop and electronica. Five years in the making, the Bristol-based band's unique approach to music blends the space of the Scandinavian Jazz scene with the creative opportunities of subtle turntablism. These highly skilled players seek a careful balance between precision and improvisation, combining the power of a jazz piano trio with the solo recordings of specially recorded performances of local musicians, both straight and scratched.Lund Quartet consists of the self-taught Simon Adcock on piano and theremin, hip hop producer Jake Wittlin on turntable, and the dub, ska and drum 'n' bass influenced Rob Childs and Sam Muscat on double bass and drums. At ease with technology, their compositions often form around the recording of a hypnotic groove, then inviting someone to play over it. This is then chopped up, sampled and replayed through the turntable. Check out a filmed live version of 'Sequoia' on YouTube to see this almost effortless process at work. A rhythmic pulse of the double bass. A train-track drum pattern and an emotional sweep of piano keys. Then along come the gloriously plaintive Afro horns, distorted and scratched.'If this is jazz, it's de-cluttered, minimal and atmospheric, with an Enoesque approach to melody.' Clive Bell, The Wire

A day of talks, open sessions and events based around the work of the New Radiophonic Workshop, relaunched this summer as part of thespace.org.Listen to Matthew Herbert talk about the workshop: Also present are previous members of the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop discussing the heritage and legacy of this vital, highly influential part of British electronic music history. This is a rare public appearance for the Workshop, leading a unique and unmissable day for those interested in the future of sound as well as electronic music and its technologies. The event can in some ways be seen as an audit of where the world of sound is currently at, 14 years after the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop closed its doors at Maida Vale. The original Workshop's role was to create new sounds, music and sound effects for BBC programmes. It quickly became the most important electronic music studio in the UK, creating innovative, ground-breaking work in often very mainstream and visible ways. Its most famous creation is the Doctor Who theme music, although it is known as much for the pioneering work of the individuals who worked there including the rare opportunity for women such as Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire to experiment as equals. The day features hour-long discussions around sound, music, listening, technology, BBC R&D and the history of the Workshop. There are a range of contributors, including its new creative director Matthew Herbert, Mandy Parnell, Jez Nelson, Micachu, Paul Morley, Yann Seznec, James Mather, Max de Wardener, Dr Harry Witchell, Dr Mike Goldsmith, Mark Bell, Dick Mills and many others. There is also the chance for members of the audience to participate in documenting the day. Recordings of the day will be available to remix on thespace.org.

Anna Meredith is one of the UK's most in-demand young composers. Her music is widely performed around the world and alongside her acoustic commissions, Anna has also turned her focus to performing her eclectic electronic music with her band Horsebox. She has already supported These New Puritans, James Blake, Shlomo, Broadcast and Mira Calix, performing material from her debut EP 'Black Prince Fury', which will be released later in 2012.Hailing from London, via Canada and Rwanda, Tanya Auclair's musical upbringing straddled very different worlds, making for an open, instinctive approach to songwriting as well as sonics. She meshes organic and electronic, pop and experimental, using unusual rhythms, lush harmonies and touches of electronica.Listen to Anna Meredith's new song, Never Wonder, and read more about her music on the Guardian.
